Musée d’Orsay Reveals NFT Public sale Tied to Historic On-Chain Exhibition

On Thursday, a group of tokenized paintings from the Musée d’Orsay’s first-ever fee of an on-chain exhibition will hit the market—the product of two experimental artists, months of coordination by the museum’s management, and 1000’s of exhales from unknowing strangers.

The items, 5 single-edition NFTs minted on the Tezos blockchain collectively titled “The Convergence of Breath,” are the fruits of an artwork set up (and partial social experiment) now on show at Musée d’Orsay, which options within the museum’s ongoing, digital-themed exhibition, “Le Code d’Orsay.”

The set up, a metal sculpture titled “Sigma Lumina,” was created by the French artist and DJ Sébastian Devaud (aka Agoria) in collaboration with the artist Johan Lescure.

When hit by the proper alignment of sunshine from above, the sculpture produces a QR code in its shadow; curious museum patrons who scan the QR code are then directed to mint a singular, free NFT riffing on different Impressionist works on show on the Orsay—but when, and provided that, they breathe into their telephones to assist generate it.

On a current journey to the exhibition, this Decrypt reporter did in reality discover quite a few Orsay patrons, starting from kids to the aged, blowing on smartphones with bemused expressions.

Agoria and Lescure have now taken the information from these blows—up to now, over 2,000 “Sigma Lumina” NFTs have been minted by museum guests—and synthesized them right into a collection of 5 distinctive NFTs, one for every week of the exhibition’s run.

“I really like the truth that all of the blows of all of the individuals coming [to the exhibition] at the moment are linked collectively, to create a worldwide piece,” Agoria advised Decrypt.

The 5 “Convergence of Breath” NFTs will go on sale Thursday at 5pm CET on Objkt.One, a curated platform for one-of-one on-chain artworks. “Le Code d’Orsay” runs on the Musée d’Orsay by March 10.
